A pregnant pause

This is likely the longest I’ve gone between posts for some time. As the saying goes, life gets in the way.

But flowers continue and so does Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day. I’ve had an abundance of flowers for the last month, considering it’s been the dead of winter. A lot of them have appeared here, but here are some that haven’t yet. And there are many to come—my amaryllis this year are being especially slow and four have bloom stalks just beginning to come up. One of them I’ve had for at least nine years; it is the very sturdy and persistent red variety. Because it does not have any dormancy period (I distrust dormancy periods) it usually blooms in mid-March. I also have more tazettas coming up.

Now is the time when I regret not having forced even more bulbs than I did. And why didn’t I do tulips this year? What will I do in March? I guess you’ll all have to look at those red amaryllis. Or maybe I’ll just cheat and go to the Botanical Gardens spring bulb show. Or force some cherry tree branches. Or all three. It’s very traumatic. But it's also been great to have lots of flowers in the house. In a couple months, they'll be outside as well.

I always love looking at your forced bulbs. So very pretty. I forced more this year than ever before, and yet, I thought the same thing. Why didn't I force more?~~Dee

We all know about life getting in the way, Eliz. So long as you're healthy, it's no problem. Blogging is meant to be fun. Your hyacinths are awesome. Mine are just finishing.

Love those Hyacinths, Elizabeth. Be sure to put them in the ground when they're done - mine from last year's indoor pot are up outside right now! And I think blog hiatus is important to recharging and creativity (that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

Life has that way doesn't it? These are beautiful blooms....I am over ready to see blooms outside!

Glad you're doing well, Eliz. I sure understand about life getting in the way.
My amaryllis are slow this year, too. I suppose my potting them up late has something to do with it. LOL. Worth the wait, though, aren't they?

Now that I'm enjoying forced blooms so much, I also wondered why I didn't try tulips, or at least more hyacinths?

No tulips? More bulbs? I can't imagine anyone forcing more bulbs than you do!

So many lovely blooms in your house, Elizabeth! I've thoroughly enjoyed my first amaryllis blooms this winter; I suspect there will be more finding their way here next year:) Just started some hyacinths on vases, so if I'm lucky they'll bloom before the outside ones do.

The bulbs I planted out in the garden are starting to bloom and I'm asking myself the same question you did. Next year I'll qualify as a bulbaholic, if my wish list is anything to go by.

Your bulbs are beauties! Especially this time of year, can we ever have enough :)

I'm just back from a trip to Northern California, where I visited my son and Filoli (not necessarily in that order). They must have literally hundreds of pots with forced daffodils, tulips and hyacinths in bloom right now. They are out in the garden because the weather is mild. What a wonderful display of color to lift the spirits of someone still struggling with snow everywhere at home! So kudos for your own forcing efforts - you have beautiful blossoms to show for it!

I like the idea of amaryllis blooming at this time of year. You amaryllis blooms are gorgeous as are the hyacinths.
